The purpose of the retention phase is to give your teeth the support they need to remain in their new positions.

When Do I Wear My Retainer?

Dr. Donaghey will advise you on the recommended wear time for your retainer. Remember to remove your retainer when eating or engaging in contact sports.

When and How Do I Clean My Appliance?

Remove your appliance to clean it every time you brush your teeth. Brush the plastic part of your appliance with toothpaste and warm water only. You may use the Retainer Brite cleaner supplied with your retainer or an over the counter denture tablet style cleaner. Use warm (not hot) water only.

Lost or Broken Retainers:

  • The best possible place for your retainer is in your mouth.
  • Do not leave retainer out where an animal could chew it.
  • Do not wrap it in a napkin.  You may forget and throw it away.
  • Keep it in your mouth or in the case provided.

If you lose or break your retainer, there is an additional charge to repair it or make a new one. Always bring your retainer to your appointment so we can decide on the best solution.

Dr. Donaghey will advise you when you are released from our retention care; however, we will always be here for you should you have any problems. Be sure to call our office if your retainers are lost, broken or do not fit.  We will schedule an appointment to check and adjust the retainers.

Always bring your retainer with you to your appointments!
